Personalised Counselling and Psychotherapy for Individuals
Individual Therapy
What to Expect from Therapy
I meet with clients weekly, at a consistent time and place, to provide a stable and supportive framework for the therapeutic process. Where appropriate, I can also offer twice-weekly sessions, particularly during periods when additional support may be helpful.
As therapy progresses and we begin to work towards ending our therapeutic relationship, sessions will usually become less frequent. This may involve moving to fortnightly sessions and, where appropriate, occasionally monthly sessions. This gradual reduction in frequency can provide an opportunity to consolidate progress and develop confidence in managing life beyond therapy.
Your Initial Session
Our initial session will be an assessment. This allows me to gain a fuller understanding of your history, explore the challenges you are currently facing, and discuss what you hope to achieve through therapy. It is also an opportunity for us to consider whether I am the appropriate therapist to support you.
The first session also gives you the opportunity to get a sense of how I work, ask any questions you may have, and decide whether you feel comfortable working with me.
Ongoing Therapy
In our ongoing sessions, I offer a safe, non-judgemental and compassionate space where we can explore your experiences at a pace that feels right for you.
I draw from a range of therapeutic approaches and tailor our work to your individual needs, circumstances and goals. I believe that every person who comes to therapy is unique and therefore requires a personalised approach. I fit the therapeutic approach to the client, rather than expecting the client to fit the approach.
Throughout our work together, I place your autonomy and best interests at the heart of my interventions.
My Relational Approach
I work from a relational approach and, first and foremost, believe in developing a strong therapeutic relationship with you. I believe that people need to feel safe, understood and accepted in order to make meaningful changes and grow.
For this reason, I value authenticity within the therapeutic relationship. I do not believe in hiding behind a purely professional or clinical persona. I aim to meet you as a real person, while maintaining the appropriate professional boundaries and responsibilities of the therapeutic relationship.
I value the relationships I develop with my clients and feel privileged to be part of their journey. My aim is to create a therapeutic space where you feel heard, respected and supported, while also being able to explore difficult experiences honestly and safely.
Specialised EMDR sessions for trauma processing and recovery
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that can help people process and recover from traumatic and distressing experiences. It is widely used in the treatment of PTSD and Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) and can also be helpful for a range of other experiences that continue to cause emotional distress.
During EMDR, you are supported to bring specific memories, thoughts, emotions and body sensations into awareness while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, tapping or auditory tones. This process can help the brain reprocess distressing memories so that they become less emotionally overwhelming and feel more connected to the past.
Every person's experience of EMDR is different. The number of sessions required will depend on the nature and complexity of the experiences being addressed. As a guide, it may take approximately 6 to 10 sessions to work through a single traumatic memory, although this can vary considerably.
I use EMDR to support clients with:
Single-incident trauma, including:
Accidents
Medical trauma or medical negligence
Assault
Traumatic bereavement
Complex and attachment-related trauma, including experiences such as:
Childhood abuse or neglect
Repeated sexual assault
Bullying
Emotional invalidation
Developmental trauma
Trauma associated with chronic health conditions
Other difficulties, including:
Phobias
Distressing or intrusive memories
Experiences that continue to feel emotionally unresolved
EMDR Intensives
EMDR can be incorporated into ongoing therapy or offered in a more intensive format, depending on your individual needs and circumstances.
I offer EMDR intensive sessions in person on selected Sundays, with the following options:
10am to 1pm
3-hour intensive session
10am to 4pm
6-hour intensive session
Intensive sessions provide dedicated time for focused trauma processing within a structured and supportive therapeutic environment.
Before beginning EMDR, we will discuss your individual circumstances, therapeutic goals and readiness for this type of work. EMDR is always tailored to the individual, with safety and emotional stability remaining central to the process.

Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
What is the best way to get in touch?
The quickest and most reliable way to contact me is by email at jodie@mainstonecounselling.com.
For administrative matters, my PA, Kim, can be contacted at kim@mainstonecounselling.com.
What if I’m unsure about counselling or therapy?
If you are uncertain whether therapy is right for you, please feel free to send me a brief email outlining your concerns. I do not offer free introductory calls due to the busy nature of my practice. However, I will do my best to offer guidance and answer any initial questions via email.
If you decide that you would like to explore therapy further, we can discuss arranging an initial assessment session. This gives us an opportunity to explore your circumstances, discuss what you are looking for from therapy and consider whether I am the appropriate therapist to support you.
What if you are fully booked?
I maintain a small waiting list, which I temporarily close when I am unable to offer appointments within a reasonable timeframe.
If the waiting list is open, you are welcome to join it. Please let me know if you would like to be removed from the list at any point.
Where appropriate, I may also offer referrals to trusted professionals. I only recommend therapists who are appropriately qualified, registered and accredited, and whose approach I believe may be suited to your needs.
When seeking therapy elsewhere, I recommend ensuring that the professional you choose is registered with a recognised counselling or psychotherapy body, follows an established ethical code and is subject to a formal complaints process.
What happens in the first session?
Our initial session will be an assessment. This allows me to gain a fuller understanding of your history, explore the challenges you are currently facing and discuss what you hope to achieve through therapy.
It is also an opportunity for us to consider whether I am the appropriate therapist to support you. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and get a sense of how I work before deciding whether you would like to continue.
How long will I need to be in therapy?
The length of therapy varies from person to person and depends on your individual circumstances, needs and goals. Some people may benefit from shorter-term therapy, while others may require longer-term support.
We will regularly review the work together and ensure that therapy continues to be purposeful and appropriate for you.
Fees, Cancellation and Insurance
What if I can’t afford your fees?
Please email me to discuss your circumstances. In some cases, I may be able to offer a reduced fee.
What is your cancellation policy?
I operate a 48-hour cancellation policy. If a session is cancelled with less than 48 hours' notice, the full session fee will apply.
Do you work with insurance providers?
Yes. I work with some insurance companies for weekly therapy sessions only. Please contact me to confirm whether I am registered with your particular insurer.
Online and In-Person Therapy
Do you offer online therapy?
Yes. I offer individual therapy online as well as in person. Online sessions provide flexibility for clients who may not be able to attend the practice in person.
Where are in-person sessions held?
In-person sessions are held at my practice in Finchley Road, London.
Are you near a tube station?
Yes. The Finchley Road practice is approximately a 10-minute walk from both West Hampstead and Finchley Road tube stations.
Is there parking nearby?
Yes. Parking is available on surrounding roads. Some restrictions apply at certain times, and pay-and-display bays are also available.
Clinical Experience and Areas of Specialism
Who do you work with?
I work with adults aged 18 and over, supporting clients experiencing a range of difficulties and presentations, including:
Eating disorders
PTSD and Complex PTSD (C-PTSD)
Neurodivergence, including ADHD and Autism
Anxiety
Depression
Grief and bereavement
Relationship difficulties
Early life and developmental trauma
Trauma-related difficulties
Other emotional and psychological difficulties
As an integratively trained therapist, I draw from multiple therapeutic approaches to tailor therapy to the needs, circumstances and goals of each individual.
What is your clinical experience?
I have extensive clinical experience across private practice, psychiatric hospitals, inpatient and outpatient services, statutory services and private mental health organisations.
I have worked with adults experiencing a wide range of mental health difficulties, including trauma, eating disorders, addiction and substance misuse, co-occurring mental health difficulties and complex presentations.
Do you work with clients presenting with high risk to themselves or others?
As a private practitioner, I have a responsibility to ensure that the level of support required can be safely and appropriately provided within a private practice setting. If, following assessment, I do not feel that I can safely meet your needs within my private practice, I will discuss this with you and may recommend a more appropriate service or level of care.
Where appropriate, I may work with clients who require additional professional support, provided there is an appropriate network of professionals involved in their care and clear communication between services.
Do you work with other professionals?
I regularly work as part of multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) alongside other healthcare and mental health professionals and, where appropriate, attend MDT meetings to support collaborative care and ensure treatment is appropriately coordinated.
Do you work with neurodivergent clients?
Yes. I work with neurodivergent adults, including individuals who are ADHD and Autistic.
Do you work with eating disorders?
Yes. I have extensive specialist experience working with eating disorders, including individual therapy, family work, group therapy and psychoeducation.
Where someone is medically unstable as a result of an eating disorder, it may be necessary to involve other healthcare professionals in their care. This may include working collaboratively with a GP, psychiatrist, dietitian or other appropriate healthcare professionals.
Where necessary, I will discuss this with you and, with your consent, support appropriate collaboration with other professionals to ensure that your care is safe and appropriately coordinated.
Confidentiality, Privacy and Professional Standards
Will anyone know I’m seeing a counsellor or therapist?
Therapy is confidential, and information will not be shared without your consent. Where appropriate, and with your permission, it may be helpful to work collaboratively with other professionals involved in your care, such as your GP or psychiatrist.
There are a small number of circumstances where confidentiality may need to be breached. These may include:
A serious risk of harm to yourself or others
Safeguarding concerns, including concerns relating to the protection of children or vulnerable adults
Information relating to acts of terrorism or other circumstances where there is a legal obligation to disclose information
Are you professionally registered?
Yes. I am a registered and accredited member of the following professional bodies:
BACP, British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy
Addiction Professionals (AP)
EMDR UK and Europe
Membership and accreditation with professional bodies means that my practice is subject to established professional and ethical standards. This includes:
Regular clinical supervision
Continuing professional development (CPD)
Adherence to professional ethical codes
Being subject to a formal complaints procedure
These professional standards help ensure that therapy is provided safely, ethically, confidentially and professionally.
Are you professionally insured?
Yes. I hold appropriate professional indemnity and public liability insurance for my private practice.
Crisis and Emergency Support
What happens if I am in crisis?
My practice is not an emergency or crisis service, and I am not available to provide immediate or out-of-hours crisis support.
If you are experiencing an immediate risk of harm or feel unable to keep yourself or someone else safe, please contact 999 or attend your nearest Accident and Emergency department.
For urgent mental health support in England, you can also contact NHS 111 and select the mental health option.
If you are currently working with a mental health crisis team or other healthcare professional, please follow the crisis plan or contact them directly.
What happens if you are away or unavailable?
I will let you know in advance about planned periods of absence where possible. During periods when I am away, I will provide information about appropriate sources of support should you need help while I am unavailable.
If you require urgent support while I am away, please use the appropriate emergency or crisis services rather than waiting for my return.
