Introduction

Emotions can sometimes feel like a roller coaster ride, can't they? One moment you’re feeling high, and the next you’re deep in a pit of despair. Managing these emotional highs and lows is key to maintaining overall wellbeing. So, let’s dive into a few basic tools for effectively managing emotions.

The Power of Breathing

Let’s start with something simple but incredibly powerful: breathing. I used to roll my eyes when people suggested I should take a deep breath. How could something so trivial help me manage anger or frustration? Here is the thing, when you learn to breathe properly, it actually works because of the biological mechanisms behind it. Deep, controlled breathing activates your parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes a state of calm. Try inhaling deeply through your nose, holding it for a few seconds, and then exhaling slowly through your mouth. This technique can help ground you, reducing feelings of anger and anxiety.

Expressing Anger in Healthy Ways

Next up is finding healthy outlets for anger. Anger is a perfectly normal and healthy emotion that often gets a bad reputation because people often feel scared of it from witnessing it being managed badly. We’ve all been there with that feeling of rage bubbling beneath the surface. Instead of lashing out or holding it in, try these or other approaches. Writing out your feelings can be incredibly cathartic. Or, if you're feeling particularly fiery, vent to a friend or scream into a pillow. Other options include throwing cushions against a wall or going for a fast walk or run. Physical movement releases endorphins, which can lighten your mood and help to dissipate that angry energy.

Comforting Yourself Through Sadness

When sadness creeps in, self soothing can be your best friend. Wrap yourself up in a warm fleece or a heated blanket. For some people it provides comfort and a sense of security. Tapping yourself just by your collar bones can also be a valuable technique because it connects you back into the present moment, which is crucial in dispelling overwhelming feelings. Hugging yourself is another simple yet effective method of self comfort. Listening to your go to feel good songs or using soothing smells like lavender can also help sooth you. If all else fails, take a moment to retreat to a safe place in your mind where you can find peace or focus on a comforting memory. Also remember that its is okay to be sad and sometimes a good cry is cathartic.

Having a toolkit filled with emotional management strategies is essential. Just like you’d reach for a hammer when a nail needs to be driven into the wall, picking up one of these emotional regulation tools when you feel a wave of emotion approaching is normal.
